Crisanta's Room

The walls of my room used to be such an ugly peach color that I resorted to plastering my walls with pictures and posters- just to cover it up. I finally painted my room a couple of summers ago and decided to put some effort into decorating it, like the rooms pictured on tumblr. However, I didn't have much money to spend; So how do you decorate your room on a budget? HIT UP A DOLLAR STORE! I went to Dollarama and also looked around my house for old art supplies. Being crafty as a kid and never throwing anything out really paid off for me, so don't forget to check out your own storage for anything useful.

  • The photos of Greece were just ripped out from a calendar.
  • The vines I have hanging from my ceiling are from the dollar store, along with the bamboo clothes pegs holding photos.
  • I also bought a pack of 8 plastic pegs in the shape of birds @ Home Outfitters for $4.

  • I've had the black mesh organizer, that's hanging from the ceiling, since I was younger. It stores all my stuffed animals and random baubles. It's sold @ Ikea for $9.99.
  • I keep the souvenirs from all of my travels on top of my dresser.
  • The cut out of the word "explore" was made from the same Greece calendar mentioned above.
  • Hanging on the right side of my dresser, I have the wire from a vine of artificial flowers pegged with postcards. You can use pipe cleaners as well to get the same effect!

For the cut outs of "Live laugh Love" I used black construction paper from Dollarama. *CUTE-TIP: When making a cursive word cut-out, write it on paper first... that way it'll be much easier to draw & cut.*
On my wall, I hung bags from stores like Tiffany and Co., Coach and Pandora. I got the idea from my friend Fayola Benjamin's bedroom wall (right).

The curtains and curtain rods are from Bed Bath and Beyond, I don't know how much they were exactly, but they were fairly cheap. During the day I tie the curtains up for natural light; I use my honor roll ropes for that. Just below, there's a shot of my room at night with the Christmas lights on.

In between my windows I have a large picture frame that holds 27 pictures. I got it from Japan Camera for about $19.99. Along the border I wrote song lyric quotes with a silver Sharpie and above the frame I placed a cut-out I made of the word "Peace". (I used different ads from various magazines.)

On top of my curtains I have white Christmas lights hanging, they were from the dollar store as well! The lamp on my side table was a gift from my Dad on my 7th bithday; (you can spin the top of the barbie off and its actually a shampoo bottle.) My dad had it made for me, so it's extra special and has lasted the test of time.

I bought the Bob Marley poster from a poster sale at my school, it was under $10. (Most universities have poster sales each semester, and have amazing and cheap stuff to buy!) My necklace display was just $3 on sale from Winner's Homesense, which is basically the Canadian version of HomeGoods. The flowers behind my necklaces are simply Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume scent testers. And I made the Disney-style "Dream" cut-out using the same dollar store black construction paper that I mentioned earlier.

*CUTE-TIP: For help making word cut-outs, instead of buying stencils just try searching "calligraphy" online. You'll have a variety of fonts & designs to choose from.*

When I painted my room, I also did a special treatment to my closet doors. I started off by painting them white, and then used chalkboard paint to make some chalkboard areas. I chose a lime green paint and used the left over bright blue from my walls to finger paint the designs. And lastly, I wrote my favorite song quotes using different colored sharpies all over. >>

<< This is a Dream Catcher I made using scraps of different materials that I found lying around my art box. A tutorial on how to make this modern dream catcher is soon to come!

A little flower arrangement I made using artificial flowers from Michael's Arts and Crafts, but you can buy them from anywhere really... even the dollar store. Instead of using a vase, I used a mason jar I bought from the dollar store and I added  some real dried lavender to the bouquet. I have arrangements in smaller vases around my room also. >>
