CUTE-TIP #19

When it comes to fishtail braids, the thinner strands you use- the better it will look; Thicker strands create a more normal braid.

Heads or Fishtails?

Fishtail braids are everywhere nowadays and celebrities like Kendall Jenner make them look effortlessly chic. This braiding style adds a pulled together yet edgy vibe to your look and can be worn dressed up or down because of it's intricate detail. Plus, even if it's a little messy, it still looks good!

If you plan to fishtail your hair before going out, I suggest straightening your hair first; This way your braid comes out nice & neat. For a more relaxed daytime look, I usually just use my natural curly hair, or braid it while wet. Here are my steps for fishtail braiding:

Step 1: Divide your hair into 2 sections.                                                                                   Step 2: Take a strand from the right end.

Step 3: Bring the strand over into the middle.

*CUTE-TIP: When it comes to fishtail braids, the thinner strands you use- the better it will look; Thicker strands create a more normal braid. *

<< Step 4: Now take a strand from the outside of the left section, while tightly holding onto the strand from the right side.

Step 5: Bring the left strand into the middle and over the right strand. >>

<< Step 6: Grab the strand that was on the right side and merge it with the larger left side section.

Step 7: Repeat! And make sure you do it very tightly. >>

Now you're done & ready to hit the town!

J's New Loves

*I bought these items in the last few days, so hurry to the stores if you want them in your collection too.*

My Jewelry Haul

<< A sage faux stone ring set in burnished silver,
with a stretchy band to fit any finger.  $4.80 @ Forever21

Closeup of the Kardashian Kollection Art Deco-style
Marcasite pendant necklace.  $15.60 on sale @ Sears >>

..........................................................................................................................

<< A short gold-chained necklace with light aqua
  gemstones. $4.80 @ Forever21

A set of 3 pearlized stud earrings in light pink,
olive/brown, and dark brown. $6.95 @ Old Navy >>

    ..........................................................................................................................

<< Mother Of Pearl studs, rimmed in gold.
$2.80 @ Forever21

I'm a fan of this new accessory trend: Ear Cuffs...
This package comes gold, silver, and pewter. $8 @ Macy's >>

<< Cropped Tops... come in a variety of styles. These two are by Material Girl, and have different cuts and feels. The zig-zag print top is fitted all the way through, so it almost resembles BodyCon, and has an open back with three elastic bands. The wavelength/tie-dye printed top has a swing fit, which gives it a breezy feel. With it's spaghetti straps and sunset colors, it's perfect for summertime.

$15.80 @ Forever21

<< Polka Dots... such a fun & timeless pattern. This black shirtdress has a cream polka dot going on, which makes it classic yet fresh. The fit is flattering and really comfortable; Belting at the waist adds more shape but you can go without one as well. Speaking of belts, this dress was missing the original it came with, so I asked the cashier about a discount, and got 10% off. Once I was home I added this turquoise Material Girl belt- I love the pop of color it gives.

$9.95 @ Macy's
<< Floral & Lace... are two loves of mine and this scarf just so happens to have both. The long pieces of fabric were sewn together vertically, giving it reversibility and length. That's enough to make this scarf cool, but I plan to deconstruct it and make amazing things... like headwraps, bandeaus, etc. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was made for a DIY project, or should I say "multiple". haha.. I will of course post pictures as I go; Wish me luck. ;-]

slow dancing in a dressing room......

After trying on several dresses, (one of which I bought and will post in a My New Purchases post)... I wanted to document my actual outfit for the day. There was something about the lighting, the lovely full length mirror, and the overall Forever21 decor in my dressing room that screamed "PHOTO-OP!" Come to think of it, I probably held up a line of girls waiting to do the same, but you know when you're feeling good the rest just doesn't seem to matter. So I decided to channel John Mayer and slow dance in a dressing room....

Now let's breakdown my look:

  • I'm wearing an abstract print jersey jumpsuit by Apostrophe. I bought this from Sears last summer for 13 bucks, but this was my first time wearing it. haha... I loved it then, and really love it now.
  • The jumpsuit has spaghetti straps, so I brought a thin woven jacket for layering. Also from Sears, it has a pleated open waterfall front, and a slight sheen to the fabric which means it can be dressed up or down.
  • My sandals are from Forever21; They're a nude patent t-strap and were only $7.50.
  • Jewelry included a long-chained LOVE necklace in black, gold, and rhinestone... Three bracelets in dark brown wood, black bead, and a beige gemstone strand set in gold... And my earrings were a pair of olive/brown pearlized studs rimmed in gold (Pictured in the My New Purchases Post)...
  • My everyday bag is in the background on the door handle, check out It's your birthday, so I know you wanna STYLE out... for a better picture and description.

CUTE-TIP #18

Don’t forget to use a lip balm with sunscreen protectant while in the sun; Your lips need TLC too.

How To Make A Headwrap

Have you guys seen the headwraps at stores like Forever21 and Macy's? I know I have and now I'm obsessed. The couple that I have so far are beyond cute, I absolutely love them. But have you ever wondered how to make them? It's actually quite easy. Here are a few quick steps to help you make one, using scarves you probably have at home.

Step 1: Find a square scarf. The one I used is one of my moms old polyester scarves.

Step 2: Fold the scarf diagonally in half into a triangle.

Step 3: Fold the scarf over several times, so you end up with a long thin rectangle.

LOL I look like a maniac, don't mind me.
Step 4: Wrap the scarf around your head and cross the ends into an X shape. (pictured)

Step 5: Now twist your X around so the center is a tight twist. (The ends should overlap so they are the opposite of Step 4.)

Step 6: Simply wrap the ends around to the back of your head & tie a knot.

Step 7: Tuck the excess fabric underneath the headband to create a neat look.

Headwraps work with any hairstyle. Whether you plan to wear your hair down, in a messy bun, or in cute braid... you can't go wrong with a headwrap. Especially if it's homemade!

You can also make a headwrap using a scarf that's long, thin, and rectangular, instead of square-shaped. Skipping the folding step, go straight into wrapping it around your head, and then twist at the center.

Outfit of the Day

Hey! I'm Crisanta one of the creators of fashiontakemyheart, along with my cousin Jasmine. I'm 19 years old and from Toronto, Canada. Our blog is here to meet all of your fashion needs, from hair care to make-up, DIY's, and of course clothes!

Top by Material Girl
*CUTE-TIP: when picking out an outfit it is a good idea to look through your old clothes;* You never know what you may find and sometimes you forget what's in your own wardrobe. This skirt for example, I bought it from Jean Machine about 7 years ago for $20(CAD) and hadn't worn it until today. But I pulled it out and it worked with multiple current trends: Boho, Knee-Length Skirts, High-Waisted Bottoms.

The jean jacket I'm wearing is another oldie but goodie. While vacationing in Florida 6 years ago, I found this jacket at some random clothing store; It cost me only $15(USD). The top is by Material Girl (Check out this awesome clothing line, made by Madonna's daughter Lourdes, at Macy's), and it only cost me $7(USD)on sale. BARGAIN! Another piece that's in line with the trends, my top is printed, flowy, with an asymetrical hem, and a black lace inset at the back. It can also be paired with leggings or skinny jeans; *CUTE-TIP: Don't be afraid to dress one item several different ways!*

Moving on to accessories, I didn't go too crazy in this outfit... just a few nice pieces that I felt complimented my look.

So let's start with my necklaces: I'm wearing a Return to Tiffany heart tag necklace which was a gift for my 16th birthday from my friends. At $140(USD), it's obviously on the pricey side so any thin silver chain would be nice. I paired that necklace with a long beaded chain from American Eagle and it cost about $3(CAD) on sale.

Now for bracelets, I simply chose two of my favorites... one of them being my pink and silver Coach bangle that I got on sale for $29.99(USD) at the Coach Outlet. *CUTE-TIP: Honestly when it comes to Coach I never buy anything at regular price. Go to the outlets! You won't be disappointed, you can find really good deals!!!*  Believe it or not I bought my second bracelet on Canal Street (New York City) for $6(USD), even though it's real silver and looks like a Tiffany bracelet.*CUTE-TIP: A little trick to know if an item is real silver or not is to look for the number "925", that means it's real silver.*

The rings I'm wearing are from a pack of 10 for $5(CAD) that I bought at H&M. I wore them all on the same finger but you can divide them up and wear it any way you want! My earrings are just simple pearls that give any look a classy touch. You can buy pearl earrings anywhere from the dollar store to Forever 21. My sunglasses are new Kardashian Kollection aviators. I bought them at Sears while shopping with Jasmine, they're regularly $30(USD) but I got them on sale for $17(USD).

Lastly, I wore these cute American Eagle wedges that I bought for $14 at the end of last summer. *CUTE-TIP: A good time to go shopping is at the end of a season. Stores knock their prices down so much to make room for new merchandise.*

Awks, it looks like I have no hand- but I totally do.
That concludes my head-to-toe report so here's a picture of my full outfit again.

If you like the clothes and or accessories I'm wearing, I've listed the different store links below:

CUTE-TIP #17

If you want to try nail design, but know you don't have a steady hand... just practice on a piece of paper first. There's less pressure that way. ;-)

How to Give Yourself a Manicure

Step 1: Take off any nail polish you may have on; This is important because you want a clean surface to work with.

Step 2: Using a four-sided buffer (which you can get from Sephora or any beauty supply store)... file, buff, polish, and shine your nails.

Step 3: Use a cuticle butter to help nourish your nails. My 2 favourites are Lush's Lemony Flutter, and G.O Bigelow Rose Salve from Bath and Body Works. The Lemony Flutter goes for about $12 CAD and the Lavendar Salve is about $6 CAD. Both are equally great buys!

Step 4: Apply a base coat. I usually use OPI but when it comes to base coats it doesn't really matter.

Step 5: Pick your nail color, and apply one coat.

Step 6: Once your first coat is dry put a second.

Step 7: After both coats of polish are dry, apply a top coat. A good top coat polish will prevent your nails from chipping under most conditions, so don't forget this step. My absolute favorite brand of top coat is Seche Vite which goes for $9-$11. That might sound expensive but it is sooo worth the money; I have never had my nail polish last that long! If you can't find Seche Vite then OPI ($9.99 CAD), Orly ($5.99 CAD), Essie ($9.99 CAD) and China Glaze ($6.99 CAD) brands work just as well.

Step 8: Let your nails dry. To speed up the process you can use a finishing spray, like DeMert Nail Enamel Dryer (a professional manicurist's spray, it's sold at multiple stores. I got mine at a grocery store for just 2 bucks) or Sephora by OPI Drying Drops, by putting a drop one minute after applying polish. *CUTE-TIP: Try running your fingers under cold water if you don't have a quick-drying top coat to seal your nail polish. This will help your nails dry faster!*

Sparkles & Flowers Design

The trick to doing designs on your nails is to have a steady hand. *CUTE-TIP: Try practicing your designs on paper before you make them on your nails.*

For this design I used Essie "Peach Daquiri" and Essie Luxe Effects " A Cut Above". For the designs I used black and silver nail polishes with thin brushes geared to nail design.

Nude Chevron Design

I'm wearing a nude Forever 21 colour here. For the design I used Sally Hanson "Blue Me Away" and "Kook-A-Mango".

It's your birthday, so I know you wanna STYLE out...

June 20th
The Event?  Birthday / Cirque Du Soleil: Zarkana performance
The City?  New York City
The Weather?  96 degrees
The Time of Day?  Late afternoon into night

The Perfect Birthday Outfit. I don’t know about you guys but every year on my birthday, I’m faced with the same question: “What do I wear?” And whether you’re going out at night, having a relaxed birthday dinner with friends, or just simply getting together with family- there will definitely be pictures taken. Looking back on these photos should be fun, but if you don’t feel good in what you’re wearing then you won’t look good and it’s all downhill from there. So here’s a post devoted to what I, Jasmine (Co-Creator of fashiontakemyheart), wore for my special day and how it worked for me.
Call It Spring Polakis Wedges
This year I decided to go to NYC for a Cirque Du Soleil show and going to Manhattan insures a good amount of walking, so the right footwear is key. Generally, when putting together an outfit I go by a simple rule: Pick the shoes you want to wear so they can guide your look. Though the shoes I had in mind didn’t scream, “Great for walking!”, the Call It Spring Polakis wedge sandals were perfect for this occasion. Originally 50 bucks, I got them on sale for $39.95 at JCPenney. And not only does the added height on a wedge elongate your legs but it gives any look a more stylized feel.
Wait! There's more... »

CUTE-TIP #16

If you don't have nail polishes with thin tip brushes made for nail design, try using a thin paintbrush for strokes or a toothpick for dotting as an alternative.

CUTE-TIP #14

It’s practical to utilize every piece in your collection. For example even though a belt came with something, that doesn’t mean it belongs to it.
