Trends of the Summer

Summer's nearing it's end but the fashion trends of these past 3 months are anything but over. If you're a bit behind the times, no worries... FTMH is here to provide you with a rundown of what's been hot during the heat:

Layering Jewelry

Do you have a lot of jewelry, but only wear a few pieces at a time? Well this summer everyone's making the most of their jewelry collection. Stack up multiple bracelets and rings and layer on the necklaces; Whatever you do- keep accessorizing!

Hats & Headwraps

Sometimes you throw one on as a shield from the sun, and other times to be the epitome of chic; Whatever the reason, headwear is a nice touch.

Maxi Skirts

Don't feel like wearing pants, or shorts, or anything constricting? Well just throw a maxi skirt on and you're on your way to a great look. There are so many styles, colors, shapes, and fabrics to choose from, you're bound to find the skirt(s) of your dreams this summer. (P.S. Remember to transition these into fall; Slip on some cute booties or flats and you've got it made.)

Sandals & Wedges

Summer footwear is always fun; From studs to prints, and metallics to beads, there are endless combinations and styles to choose from. Be sure to browse your favorite stores, and ones you don't usually shop in, to find some great sandals & wedges before the summer's over.

Floral Print

A major trend this summer has been floral print. This lovely motif evokes a dainty and playful feeling, and can be toned down or played up in an outfit. You just can't go wrong incorporating the beauty of nature into your look. (Check out how I wore my muted floral Aritzia blazer.)

Crop Tops & Bustiers

Crop tops and bustiers have made a huge debut this year, and this summer was the perfect time to showcase this cool item. These tops can be paired with high-waisted bottoms, or layered underneath sheer blouses or denim shirts. They are so multi-purpose, what's not to love?

Customized Denim Shorts

Take an ordinary pair of jean shorts and make them interesting. That's pretty much the recipe for this summer's hot trend: Customized Denim Shorts. Whether you cut them off for a frayed look, or add a fun print or graphic, shorts are a must have to beat the heat. (This would be a great DIY project for all you crafters out there!)

Colored + Printed Pants

What can we say about printed and/or colored bottoms that we haven't already? They are an absolute staple in any wardrobe, and instantly add interest to your outfit. (C and her friend Sadiya have the colored jeans trend down pat.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So these are trends everyone's wearing this summer and we're sure they will transition wonderfully into Autumn. If you're missing anything from our guide, just take a trip to your local shopping grounds and take advantage of all the sales. Don't forget to share your finds, we definitely will! xx

A 20/20 Birthday Vision

Hey all, C here! As you all may have seen from our tweets- I turned 20 years old on January 26th; This year I decided to have two parties, one at Guelph (where I go to school) and one in Toronto (where I live). My biggest concern about my birthday, as always, was finding the perfect outfits.

Now since I live in Guelph for school I had to buy my outfits there, and Guelph is a pretty small town. The best store in our mall is H&M so that was my only hope; Thankfully H&M pulled through and I was able to find two bodycon party dresses. One was just $10 and it had a lace top and sleeves, with a sweetheart neckline and the second was $19.99, black with a zipper and a gold foil baroque applique along the front $19.99.

Makeup-wise I kept things very simple and went with natural golds and browns. With my red dress I wore silver jewelry and for my black dress I wore gold jewelery, layering different bracelets. For both looks I opted for the same hairstyle: lightly curled and down with a hair bow. Making the bow is actually a lot harder then it looks, and even harder to do it on your own. Thankfully my roommate was able to help me out; It requires a lot of bobby pins and patience. You basically do the same thing that you would do normally when tying a bow, it's just a bit more difficult because your hair is very flimsy.

Besides all the fun I had with my friends at my parties, I also received some pretty sweet presents this year. I got Return to Tiffany Heart Tag Earrings, which I've been asking for FOREVER, a bracelet from Stella and Dot, Marc Jacob's Dot perfume, a cupcake Pandora charm, and some cute clothes. Happy Birthday to me!

C's Holiday Outfits

Party 1:  Wine & cheese night at home

Every year I have a themed Christmas party with some of my closest friends from highschool. The theme usually surrounds the food we're eating, and it's always a potluck. This year we (we as in me) decided to have a wine and cheese night because I LOVE WINE. So we had many different types of wine, crackers and cheese. It was great!

My outfit: I wore the mint green lace collared top that I bought at Marshalls in the states a few months ago. For my hair I did a high ponytail and teased my hair a bit (unfortunately you can't really tell here because I'd already had a few glasses of wine...) and I paired it with a floral white headband I bought in Singapore. For my jewelry I stacked a combination of white and silver bracelets, wore my standard pair of pearl earrings and Tiffany necklace.

Party #2:  Hotel Christmas Party, Downtown Toronto

Not only was this party cool because my sister's friends had it at a hotel but also because we were divided into 2 teams : Red vs. Green. And everyone had to dress in their colour. I was on team green and decided to wear a long sheer mint green skirt (which apparently wasn't green enough for people) and tucked in a purple top from Wilfred. My jewelry again was simple: stacked silver bracelets, Tiffany necklace, peace sign necklace and pearl earrings.

Party #3:  Christmas Eve

For Christmas Eve I wore this maroon peplum top I bought from H&M a while back that I've been saving for Christmas. (J has the same top; It's that great.) I didn't really wear any bracelets, instead I wore a nice collar necklace that I bought from Forever21. I wore this top with a tight black skirt from H&M as well. But you could also wear this top with dark skinny jeans for a more casual look.

Party #4:  New Year's Eve

For New Year's Eve my best friend and her boyfriend came over and we had a little party in my basement (see http://fashiontakemyheart.blogspot.ca/2012/12/last-minute-new-years-eve-ideas.html). I wore a black and cream chiffon dress from TopShop. I wore a lot of accessories/bling, consisting of a collar necklace (A Christmas gift from Forever 21) and various gold and pearl bracelets (From Forever21 and Juicy Couture) since New Year's style is all about shine.

Party #5:  New Year's Day

On New Year's Day we went to my aunt's house for dinner, as tradition. I wore a blouse that I bought at Forever21 on sale (Boxing Day obviously) and I wore red lipstick and a red purse for a pop of colour!

Shine Bright Like a Diamond

Christmas time doesn't have to mean red & green, it can just mean adding a bit of holiday shine to your look.
This is the outfit I came up with for the Christmas party at my office, and it was a big hit. Here's a breakdown of what I wore:

Black blazer (not pictured), $19.95 @ H&M
Black & gold glittered tulip back top, $17.80 @ Forever21
Material Girl black & white vertical/horizontal stripe skirt with a back seam, $9.99 @ Macy's
Black suede platform pumps (not pictured), $29.99 @ Payless Shoe Source
Gold arrowhead necklace set, $5.95 @ H&M
Various bracelets from different Forever21 sets
Gold etched square studs from a set, $3.80 @ Forever21
Black stockings (not pictured), $4.95 H&M

So I shared my look, now it's you're turn; We'd love to see what holiday inspiration works its into our reader's ensembles. Let's all get into the spirit together! -  J
