Sari For Party Rockin'

This is the sari I wore for my parents surprise 25th anniversary party. The camera made the colors look brighter but they are actually more of a pastel. Just like the Western hemisphere, South Asia's fashion culture is following some of this summer's trends namely pastel shades. Though I don't usually wear sari's, this is my FAVORITE one. Big ups to my mom who bought it for me.

I decided to go with a sari blouse with sleeves rather than a halter or sleeveless blouse. I'm glad I chose that option because I love the way it looked! We couldn't find material that was the exact shade of pink but this pink still looks good, and it had a slight shine which I liked. (A blouse in the orange colour would have worked as well.) The back of the blouse has a scoop with tasseled rope to tie it together, for added style. You can't see it clearly in the picture to the right, but the general concept is there.

I chose to go really simple with accessories: Thin hoop earrings, a Swarovski pendant, a stack of silver and blue bangles on one arm and a coach bangle and silver bracelet on the other. When it comes to South Asian fashion to South Asian fashion we don't really go crazy with rings, so I chose two simple silver ones.

Normally, we wear thick intricate chokers with matching chandelier earrings and lots and lots of bangles. It was hard to find a set of bangles with these exact colours so I just dug in my collection and pulled out some pale blue and silver ones. I got about a dozen of them for $1 at Gerard Street (Little India) in Toronto. I didn't have matching chokers or chandelier earrings for this sari, which is why I used what I had. Also, because this sari has so many colors I wanted to put focus on that rather than my jewelry.

Now for saris you should really wear some kind of heel. Since they are very long, you don't want it to drag along the floor. Strappy sandals are perfect for the job. I wore similar sandals to the one in the left picture, but instead of glitter they had rhinestones. I bought them from CallitSpring for less than $30 last year. To finish the look off I put a blue bindi on my forehead; It came in a really cheap pack from the sari shop. (If you're from Toronto there are soooo many places to buy them.)
