J's Girl Crush: Rashida Jones

Movie star, tv actress, singer, daughter of Quincy Jones, and certified style icon; Rashida Jones is just that cool. Both her street & red carpet looks show a unique personal style that's very refreshing. From head to toe, Rashida is not afraid to try something different- often sporting a new haircut or style, statement jewelry, and striking shoes. She often mixes items from H&M with unique designers like Proenza Schouler and Azzedine Alaia. Not afraid to use prints, colors, or different textures- Rashida shows that she's not chasing trends, just wearing what she likes.
This is why I love her:

Gettin' My Kicks on Route 66

Hey, it's J! So as you probably remember, I'm running FTMH for the next few weeks since C is off being a world traveler. But don't forget I'm actually going on a vacation of my own tomorrow, a cross-country road trip to be exact... so it'll just be you, me, and the road. Oh and my friend Kat. ;-]... We'll be taking the no longer mapped Route 66 across to California; It should be a really exciting way to see the US and experience things we've only ever seen on TV & movies.

I'll be documenting my trip with anecdotes and snapshots from my days since we're sure to run into some interesting characters and sights. Also I hope to take street style pictures from all the states we pass through; Different regions have their own twists on trends and fads, so it'll be fun to see what people are wearing nowadays. I'm really looking forward to seeing the other side of America, getting some sun, and taking a drive on the wild side. California here we come!

                                                                                                                                                                                               - J

C Signing Off

          Hey everyone! T
oday I'll be leaving for my month long trip to Sri Lanka, India and Singapore- as mentioned previously in my How To Pack When Traveling Abroad Series. So I won't be posting anything myself, but no worries-I have some stuff saved up that J will be posting and contributing to. (She's actually going on a vacation as well, but she'll have internet access so it works out.) No matter what, Team FTMH will be here for your style needs.

Once I'm back, I'll hopefully have lots of exciting new fashionable things to share with you from the other side of the world. Have a great rest of the summer and fashion on!

                                                                                                                                               - C

How to Pack Part 5: How to Dress For the Plane

On a long flight you want to be dressed comfortably! For bottoms it's best to wear leggings, a maxi skirt, loose fitting pants, or really anything that's comfortable enough for sitting for hours at a time. Top-wise, I almost always wear a big comfy sweatshirt on the plane, because planes tend to get cold. TOMS are my go to shoe because they are really comfortable and good for walking around. Also I don't want people stepping on my feet within such a small vicinity, so open toe shoes aren't an option.

I'm only bringing one purse on this trip and it's a messenger bag, which is perfect for long days of walking and what not. Here's a list of key items to bring in your purse:

-Lip Balm
-Lip Gloss
-Hand Cream
-Hand Sanitizer
-Your Passport
-Wallet
-Hair Elastics
*Don't forget to put any liquids in a Ziploc!*

Some airlines only allow you to have two bags for carry on, if that's case for you just put your purse in one of them. This is another good reason not to fill up your carry on luggage. Now that's all for the How to Pack When Traveling Abroad Series; I'm ready for vacation! Are you?

CUTE-TIP #35

Just in case something happens to your checked in bag, pack an extra outfit in your carry-on!

How to Pack Part 4: Carry-On Luggage

When on a short flight, I only bring a purse with me as carry-on, but when going on a longer flight it's best to bring a small roller bag. My flight will be about 15 hours with an additional 5 hour lay over and then some. So I'm bringing an extra pair of clothes, underwear, socks and a bra. And I'm putting a pair of flip flops in there just in case I want to switch out of my shoes and free my feet. I also pack a couple of plastic bags to use for laundry (they can be put in your check-in as well).

*CUTE-TIP: Just in case something happens to your checked in bag, pack an extra outfit in your carry-on!*

Now when it comes to my jewelry, I avoid packing it in my check-in bag because I'd hate to lose it. If worse comes to worse, you could buy new clothes similar to your old ones but I've spent years collecting my jewelry pieces from different trips. Some of which aren't cheap either- so I'd rather keep it all with me in my carry-on.

CUTE-TIP #34

Pre-planning your outfits is a great trick to packing. When you're picking tops to pack think: "What can I wear with this?"... That way you have outfits to wear, rather than loads of separates.

CUTE-TIP #33

LUSH is a great place to pick up cool new product samples. And just think- you can use them on your next traveling adventure. What a steal!

CUTE-TIP #32

It's always smart to bring a variety of medicines & First Aid supplies when traveling; You never know what might happen, and it's good to be prepared!

How To Pack Part 3: Packing Your Check-In Bag

When it comes to packing, you don't want to over do it and end up with unnecessary things. Since I'm going to a very hot part of the world I'm making sure I have a few pairs of shorts, a pair of capris, one pair of jeggings (just in case there is a cooler day), and thin cotton pants. I'm also bringing leggings because no matter what climate- they're a great item to have. Also you should make sure you have both dressy and casual clothes; You never know when you'll need to dress up.

Packing clothes that you wear often sounds like a given, but sometimes it's tempting to bring new items or old ones you haven't gotten much use out of. If you think "Oh yea I'll finally wear this", there's a good chance you won't. The same thing goes for your jewelry and shoes as well.

CUTE-TIP #31

Instead of bringing toothpaste on a trip, give LUSH's Toothy Tabs a try. They come in a little matchstick sized box- you simply bite them and brush like normal!

CUTE-TIP #30

Do you have lots of miniature bottles of lotion and body wash laying around? Well traveling is a great time to get rid of them; No need to buy new ones, they're just the right size!

CUTE-TIP #29

Before going suitcase shopping, be sure to find out the luggage specifications for your particular airline. There are extra charges for overweight or oversized bags; That's a real vacation-bummer.

How To Pack Part 2: Toiletries

I know most people have larger sized toiletries at home, but while traveling it's a good idea to minimize your items as much as possible. (Especially when flying, due to specific regulations.) The best thing to do is buy travel sized items from a Wal-mart or Target- at under $2 they are great buys! You can find travel size shampoo & conditioner, shaving cream, hair mousse, floss, and much much more! Wal-Mart also has little travel packs that include shampoo, conditioner, a toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, deodorant, and body wash. It only costs about $5(CAD), which is a SERIOUS bargain!

How To Pack Part 1: Luggage

Your suitcase is the most important thing you need when traveling. I mean, where else are you supposed to put your stuff? Buying a suitcase can be a really costly process. You've already spent enough money paying for your trip, and you're going to need money for expenses during said trip- so you've got to find a great deal!!

Brands like Heys and Swiss usually go on sale for about $150 or a little less. But even that is a little too much in my opinion. If you don't mind what brand your suitcase is- then you can absolutely find a better deal. My mom bought my suitcase from Bentley for $49.99 (CAD).

J's DIY Jewelry

DIY TIME!! For my first project, I wanted to make jewelry. So I chose to make a bracelet- which actually became two because they are just so fun to make. ;-] ... Here's what I used:

  • 3 bundles of knitting/crocheting thread in black, bright aqua, and natural with gold accent. (I only used a small portion of thread) @ Walmart for under $3 each
  • A clipboard from the dollar store; The stripes are so cute.
  • Out of the 3 chains pictured, I used some of the silver and gold. (I still have leftovers) @ Walmart $1 each
  • For bracelet # 1, I used a basic black button for a closure. Bracelet # 2 is in a wrap style.
  • I also applied a bit of super glue to keep everything secure at the end. (Not pictured)

How To Pack: The Intro

It's summertime! School's out and you have no cares in the world. Well... if you have a job then maybe you do and if you don't have a job- that might be a sore topic. But none the less this is the time to travel! This summer I'll be traveling to Singapore, India and Sri Lanka; A vacation I've been dreaming of my entire life!

Over the next few days I will provide you with a 5 part series- where I'll detail the best ways to pack when traveling abroad & how to stay on a budget! Enjoy :)
                                                                                                                                                                       Happy Traveling, C .

CUTE-TIP #28

Oh no! You've put on too much blush. Don't fret- you can fix that. Just apply some translucent powder onto your cheeks to lessen the color, or for a cream blush just blend a bit of foundation to tone it down.

CUTE-TIP #27

Mosquito bites driving you nuts? Here's a home remedy:

Clean the area gently with soap and warm water, then squeeze a drop of minty toothpaste onto a fingertip and dab directly onto your mosquito bite. You can reapply 3 or 4 times a day until the itching dies down, just remember to clean the area before you do.

Lace Me Up!

Lace is such a romantic fabric- just adding a little will give a sweet touch to any outfit.
Here are some lovely examples of the variety of lace designs & colors worn today:
