How To Pack Part 1: Luggage
Your suitcase is the most important thing you need when traveling. I mean, where else are you supposed to put your stuff? Buying a suitcase can be a really costly process. You've already spent enough money paying for your trip, and you're going to need money for expenses during said trip- so you've got to find a great deal!!
Brands like Heys and Swiss usually go on sale for about $150 or a little less. But even that is a little too much in my opinion. If you don't mind what brand your suitcase is- then you can absolutely find a better deal. My mom bought my suitcase from Bentley for $49.99 (CAD).
Choosing your luggage can be tricky; You don't want one too big but you don't want one too small either. But remember when buying a suitcase try to find the lightest one available. If you're traveling by plane, you have a weight limit on your checked (and sometimes carry-on) luggage. If you're trip spans more than just a few days (I'll be gone for a month), then not only will you be bringing a lot of clothes- but you'll be shopping as well. Let's get real who doesn't want to go shopping when abroad? So all of that will weigh down your bag; Opt for a lighter suitcase to begin with and you'll be better off. Also, when picking a suitcase you want one with a decent amount of compartments so you can put other items separate from your clothes.
*CUTE-TIP: Before going suitcase shopping, be sure to find out the luggage specifications for your specific airline. There are extra charges for overweight or oversized bags; That's a real vacation-bummer.*
As mentioned before, carry-on or hand luggage is another factor in traveling. The same principles apply when buying this piece, but sometimes you can find an affordable luggage set. A great set to buy would include a rolling bag and a smaller shoulder bag. It's perfect because when walking, you can put the shoulder bag on the handle of the larger roller bag. Keep in mind though, while packing any hand luggage, not to make it too heavy since you'll be carrying it around at least some of the time.
Now that you've got your luggage, time to fill it with stuff! Stay tuned for Part 2 in the How to Pack When Traveling Abroad Series.
