Breaking It Up

Hey all here's a look at one of my recent ensembles. For starters I decided to curl my hair and I think it turned out pretty gorgeous if you ask me. ;-] Prior to heat styling, I used John Frieda's Dream Curls spray and an olive oil moisturizing shine serum. (Product pictures soon to come.) I then parted my hair in the middle of my head (half up/half down style), clipped the top half to keep it apart, and separated the bottom into 1 to 1 1/2 inch sections- wrapping them vertically and horizontally around the barrel of my 3/4" Conair curling iron.

I repeated the same steps on the top half of my hair, but did more horizontal curling- especially at the crown. I also alternated the direction of my curls to add some depth and variety to my style. After the curling was all done, I rubbed a few more drops of the moisturizing oil in my palms and put my head upside down to zhuzh my hair; This simple step adds a little umph and breaks up the curls a bit so they aren't so "done".

Now for the clothes. In my office, we can wear jeans (as long as they are in good taste, whatever that means haha) so I take advantage of that option most days. This particular look included black washed skinny jeans from Forever21 last year, a beautiful floral peplum top from H&M for $12.95, and a black cropped gauze cardigan from JC Penney for $14. I kept it really simple with my jewelry, wearing some new earrings with a grid of stones and a square shape from Forever21 for $3.80 and a statement ring with a round rhinestone inlay and a black & white crackled stone. Black flats were the finishing touch to this outfit. I loved it, how about you?        J

A Day In New York

As some of you may know I recently visited J (my lovely cousin) and her family in the states. We planned the trip for the long October weekend and packed all the activities we could in the few days we had there. Spending the day in NYC is a must so my sister, Samanta, and I stuck to the tradition and went out to the Big Apple; Of course, we made sure our outfits were New York worthy too. J's Urban Outfitters Buy

It's no secret that I like makeup and all things nail polish/design related; So I had to scoop up these lovely items. As you might remember, I have another e.l.f. palette from UO (Check out my Birthday post for details) but this one has brighter colors and for only $5 I couldn't pass it up. The nail art stencils were only $4 on sale and with 64 stencil designs, it's such a deal it's almost unbelievable. I can't wait to try them out and I'll be sure to upload the pics of my super cool new nails. Thanks Urban Outfitters, love ya.

Cute Outfits & All-You-Can-Eat Sushi

To celebrate my friend Sadiya's birthday we went for All-You-Can-Eat sushi, which is basically the best thing ever. Plus, the restaurant is literally beside my house which was great because I could wear my cute new wedges and not kill myself walking. Sadiya and I both looked super cute for our night out, so I just had to make a post about it. Here are the details for our looks:

Hair:     Sadiya let her natural wave shine through in a her hairstyle. My hair was actually such a mess that day and I was wayyy to lazy to straighten it so I just used my curling iron and curled over my naturally curly hair; It actually turned out nice- props to me.

Wardrobe:     I wore a light pink blouse from Winners ($15.99 CND), dark skinny jeans from American Eagle ($39.99 CND), and a silk patterned scarf I bought in India for next to nothing. I didn't wear a necklace because that would've been too much with the scarf so I made up for that by wearing silver rings, and pearl and silver bracelets. To finish the look I did very natural looking makeup and wore my new black wedges from Payless.

Sadiya wore a brown cotton jersey top which had a big oval shaped cut-out in the back (unfortunately I didn't get a picture of it). Her pants are my favorite part of this outfit; She bought these mint skinny jeans in Singapore this summer, and I'm super jealous because I wasn't able to find any while I was there. Accessory-wise she's wore a long pearl necklace that she wrapped around a couple times, and a big white and silver bangle. To add that little something extra to her ensemble Sadiya painted her nails red and rocked cheetah print wedges. Love love love.

Oh and what about the sushi? No worries.. here are some shots of the sushi we had. Yummmm :)

After the storm...

Hey all, it's J! I know I've been MIA for a while, but its because of crazy old Mother Nature; She's been wreaking havoc on the east coast. Hurricane Sandy really took a toll on New Jersey and so for a week I, along with tens of thousands of people, didn't have power- along with other effects. As you can imagine that was rough: No heat, no TV, no lights, no internet / FTMH, and the list goes on.

Luckily, things have calmed down for my family and I, and so I'm able to post this update and make some much needed changes to the blog. But it's really difficult for others that are still suffering after the hurricane and the recent snow storm. If you can donate necessary items to a shelter or volunteer for clean up your efforts will be much appreciated. With a little help we can share the weight of this devastation and lessen the burden... together.

                                                                                                                                                                                               xx J

Homecoming

September and October are when most of the universities (in Ontario, Canada) have their homecoming. It's almost always impossible to get a ticket for the football game, but there are always lots of fun activities during Homecoming weekend. And as the saying goes "Win or lose we still booze." Haha.. Not.

At my school they always hand out Homecoming shirts, each year with a different slogan. Since my school's mascot is a gryphon one of the shirts handed out this year said "10 points to Gryphondor" (If you don't get the harry potter reference that's just sad :-p ). As to be expected, the t-shirts are the boring and basic style. So we, "we" meaning my roommate because I always mess up, cut up our shirts to make them look better. (Check out our DIY: Customize Your Top post for another version of this simple project.)

For my shirt, we cut the neck and sleeves off and shortened the bottom. Remember, don't throw out your extra fabric, you can be creative and make something with it! I got a little creative myself and used the ends of the sleeves and neckline to make a cute braided headband. Here's how I did it: I braided in some yellow ribbon from my art box with the left over red fabric and tied the ends together with random fabric scraps. Sadly I didn't have my mini sewing kit with me so I couldn't finish it properly but still it worked and looked super cute!

Below are the pictures from Homecoming. I just threw on some face paint and red lipstick to go with our school colors (red, yellow and black):
